NPS in India 2026: what a contribution really costs

Paying into a private or workplace pension in India usually lowers your tax and sometimes your social-security contributions, so each unit you put in costs you less than it adds to the plan. The calculator above works this out for your salary. Below you will find this year’s effect on your pay, the tax rules and how the plan compares with saving the money yourself.

This year: salary without and with the plan

        Without planWith plan
        Gross / year (incl. bonus)₹600,000₹600,000
        Social security−₹21,600−₹21,600
        Your contribution–−₹30,000
        Income tax−₹2,500−₹2,500
        Take-home / year₹575,900₹545,900
        Employer contribution–+₹0
Into the plan (you + employer)–₹30,000
        Total received / year (take-home + plan)₹575,900₹575,900

In the example, your net pay is ₹45,491.67 a month with the plan: ₹2,500.00 less than without it (₹47,991.67) · tax & contributions saved cover 0.0%. In this case contributions bring no tax saving on your pay; any advantage comes from the support described under the tax treatment below. The balance could reach ₹1,427,773 (you ₹600,000 · employer ₹0 · return ₹827,773); at payout that is about ₹1,313,551 net (after 8.0% tax & charges).

        Tax treatment

National Pension System (NPS): employer contributions up to 14% of basic pay are tax-free (10% in the old regime, where your own contributions also get up to ₹50,000 of extra deduction). From 60 you can take up to 80% as a lump sum (60% of the fund is tax-free) and the rest buys an annuity taxed as income. Gains in equity funds are taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year. New regime: your own NPS contributions get no tax relief, but employer contributions up to 14% of your basic pay are tax-free (section 80CCD(2)).

The plan or saving it yourself?

Contributions of ₹30,000 exceed the limit by ₹30,000; the excess gets no relief.

        Frequently asked questions

Is it worth paying into NPS in India?

In the example, the plan leaves you +₹40,641 better off than saving the same money yourself, mainly because of the tax relief and any employer contribution. Returns are not guaranteed.

        Do contributions lower my tax?

Not in this case: your take-home pay falls by the full contribution. The support for this kind of saving is explained in the tax treatment above.

        What happens at payout?

In the example you would receive about ₹1,313,551 (after 8.0% tax & charges). Payout rules and taxes are listed in the tax section above.

Which return does the calculator assume?

The return is your own assumption in the calculator, not a forecast. Investments can lose value; try more than one value.
