PRS in Malaysia 2026: what a contribution really costs

Paying into a private or workplace pension in Malaysia usually lowers your tax and sometimes your social-security contributions, so each unit you put in costs you less than it adds to the plan. The calculator above works this out for your salary. Below you will find this year’s effect on your pay, the tax rules and how the plan compares with saving the money yourself.

This year: salary without and with the plan

        Without plan (MYR)With plan (MYR)
        Gross / year (incl. bonus)48,00048,000
        Social security−5,616−5,616
        Your contribution–−2,400
        Income tax−190−118
        Take-home / year42,19439,866
        Employer contribution–+0
Into the plan (you + employer)–2,400
        Total received / year (take-home + plan)42,19442,266

In the example, your net pay is MYR 3,322.17 a month with the plan: MYR 194.00 less than without it (MYR 3,516.17) · tax & contributions saved cover 3.0%. You save MYR 72 a year (tax + social security), so each unit you pay in costs you MYR 0.97. The balance could reach MYR 72,897 (you MYR 48,000 · employer MYR 0 · return MYR 24,897); at payout that is about MYR 72,897 net (after 0.0% tax & charges).

        Tax treatment

Private Retirement Scheme (PRS): relief up to RM3,000 a year and tax-free withdrawals from 55. Interest from Malaysian banks is tax-free for individuals. Contributions to a Private Retirement Scheme (PRS) and deferred annuities give a relief of up to RM3,000 a year. Withdrawals from 55 are tax-free; earlier withdrawals are taxed at 8%.
