South Africa state pension 2026: how it is calculated
The public pension in South Africa follows national rules that usually look at your years of work or contributions, your pay and the age at which you claim it. The calculator above applies the 2026 rules to your own working life. Below you will find the rules in brief, an example by claim age and what your contributions buy.
The rules in brief
- Retirement funds: Retirement income comes mainly from employer pension and provident funds and retirement annuities. Since the two-pot system (September 2024) a third of new contributions goes to a savings pot that can be withdrawn early and two thirds to a retirement pot that must buy an annuity at retirement (usually 55 to 65).
- Older Person’s Grant: From 60, SASSA pays a means-tested grant of up to R2,400 a month (R2,420 from 75) from April 2026 to people whose income and assets are below set limits.
