RA in South Africa 2026: what a contribution really costs

Paying into a private or workplace pension in South Africa usually lowers your tax and sometimes your social-security contributions, so each unit you put in costs you less than it adds to the plan. The calculator above works this out for your salary. Below you will find this year’s effect on your pay, the tax rules and how the plan compares with saving the money yourself.

This year: salary without and with the plan

        Without plan (ZAR)With plan (ZAR)
        Gross / year (incl. bonus)360,000360,000
        Social security−29,125−29,125
        Your contribution–−18,000
        Income tax−49,152−44,472
        Take-home / year281,723268,403
        Employer contribution–+0
Into the plan (you + employer)–18,000
        Total received / year (take-home + plan)281,723286,403

In the example, your net pay is ZAR 22,366.88 a month with the plan: ZAR 1,110.00 less than without it (ZAR 23,476.88) · tax & contributions saved cover 26.0%. You save ZAR 4,680 a year (tax + social security), so each unit you pay in costs you ZAR 0.74. The balance could reach ZAR 546,726 (you ZAR 360,000 · employer ZAR 0 · return ZAR 186,726); at payout that is about ZAR 437,380 net (after 20.0% tax & charges).

        Tax treatment

Retirement annuity (RA): contributions are deductible and growth is tax-free; at retirement up to a third of the retirement pot can be taken in cash and the rest buys a taxable annuity (about 20% tax used here). Interest above the yearly exemption is taxed at your marginal rate. Retirement annuity and fund contributions are deductible up to 27.5% of income, at most R350,000 a year (ZAR 99,000 for you), including your employer’s contributions. A tax-free savings account gives no deduction but tax-free growth.

The plan or saving it yourself?

Contributions of ZAR 18,000 exceed the limit by ZAR 0; the excess gets no relief.
